Austin Gamblers | Texas Standard
In 1992, a group of 20 cowboys bravely broke away from the rodeo scene to establish the Professional Bull Riders (PBR), forever altering the landscape of western sports. With each cowboy contributing $1,000, they pursued their vision of creating a dedicated sport solely focused on bull riding. Among them was Michael Gaffney, who later became the 1997 PBR World Champion and currently serves as the Head Coach of the Austin Gamblers in the PBR Teams league. Throughout the past three decades, the PBR has experienced exponential growth, evolving into a global phenomenon. It now reaches over 405MM households across more than 90 territories worldwide and has awarded nearly $300 million in prize money.
In what has been called the most significant news in the sport since PBR’s founding, in 2022 the organization launched a new league accompanying the individual competition – PBR Teams.
Enter the Austin Gamblers.
With a blend of Texan history and folk legends, the Austin Gamblers came into existence as one of the league’s eight founding teams. Drawing inspiration from the infamous gangsters of the 1920s and 1930s, along with iconic figures like Wild Bill Hickok from the old west, this team is infused with the spirit of determination and perseverance from the ground up.
The visual identity of the Austin Gamblers mirrors the team's essence, embodying an iconic character that symbolizes their unwavering intensity and competitive spirit. At the core of their logo lies the cowboy's skull, intertwined with a reference to the legendary "Dead Man's Hand," the final pair of cards held by Wild Bill Hickok before his passing. This character not only pays homage to the team's inspirational figures but also signifies the passion and lifelong dedication each member has devoted to the sport of bull riding. For the Austin Gamblers, bull riding is more than just a sport; it's a way of life, a calling that they celebrate and embrace every single day.
In 2022, along with being the first team to win multiple, let alone back-to-back events, the Gamblers won a record-setting eight consecutive games during the early weeks of the season. Gamblers’ sensation Jose Vitor Leme also rode to the first PBR Teams MVP title.
